Utah Legal Inclusion

Fellowship Application

General Information

The Utah Center for Legal Inclusion (UCLI), Intermountain Health, and Kirton McConkie have collaborated to create the Utah Legal Inclusion Fellowship, providing select law students the unique opportunity for a paid summer experience. In 2026, the fellowship will be granted to one law student from either of Utah’s two law schools, the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University or the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah.

The fellowship will include the following:

  • A 10-week paid summer fellowship with Kirton McConkie beginning May 2026; and
  • As part of the paid Kirton McConkie fellowship, an opportunity to work directly with in-house legal counsel on Intermountain matters.

Purpose

The fellowship plays a significant role in UCLI’s efforts to support students to thrive in the legal profession by developing professional skills, exploring career options, and receiving financial compensation. The fellowship is aimed at facilitating opportunities for law students who have a long-term goal of practicing law in the state of Utah and who haven’t necessarily had a robust support system throughout their academic career. The Inclusion Fellowship may be a good fit for you if you have wondered if you belong in the legal profession but are passionate about using your legal credentials to serve others. Becoming an Inclusion Fellow has less to do with a perfect or aspirational GPA, and much more to do with passion for the legal field and a commitment to giving back to the community.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the fellowship, students must:

  • Demonstrate commitment to advancing fairness and opportunity in Utah’s legal profession; and
  • Be enrolled as a 1L for the 2025-2026 academic year in a Utah law school (either the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University or the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah)

All eligible students are welcome to apply.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by a committee with representatives from UCLI, Intermountain Health, and Kirton McConkie, with applications evaluated using the following criteria:

  • Future potential to advance fairness and opportunity in Utah’s legal profession, regardless of background;
  • Demonstrated record of service to communities in need; and
  • Prior professional experience, academic record, and current grades.

Note that these are the primary considerations for selection; we encourage all to apply, regardless of academic performance. Top candidates advance to an interview phase involving Kirton McConkie attorneys and UCLI staff.
